  18. <p>     American society does not do nearly enough to improve the
  19. lot of the poor, but it puts its whole heart into sprucing up
  20. the nomenclature used to describe them. Now sociologist William
  21. Julius Wilson has suggested that the term underclass be
  22. replaced by, well, maybe, "ghetto poor."
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     Wilson believes the long-familiar term may need to be set
  25. aside "because it has become a code word for inner-city blacks
  26. [and] has enabled journalists to focus on unflattering behavior
  27. in the ghetto." Wilson, however, added that he was just
  28. advancing an idea, and would probably continue to use
  29. underclass in his own work.
